I would assume the market has collapsed on matsutake, and you can now find them as the common mushroom they are, instead of the rare, over-picked, 'shroom they've been.
There was much more diversity than what is reported here. I think the number of edibles up there made people spend most of their time harvesting, instead of hunting small maybe interesting things.
